This updated version of the system <a href=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/en\/wp\/what-is-leed-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>LEED<\/strong><\/a> sets new standards in energy efficiency, water management, and indoor environmental quality, while prioritising the health and wellbeing of occupants. In this article, we will explore the key features of LEED v5 and its impact on creating buildings that are more environmentally friendly and healthier for those who inhabit them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-x-large-font-size\">Principal features LEED v5<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/wp\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/LEED-v5-System-Goals.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35759\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Source: U.S. Green Building Council.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/en\/wp\/what-is-leed-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LEED<\/a><\/strong>, by its English acronym Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a globally recognised certification system that evaluates and ranks the sustainability of buildings. Version 5 of LEED, also known as LEED v5, is the latest update to this system; for now, only the beta version for Existing Buildings has been released. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/en\/wp\/leed-ebom-certification-consists-of-two-main-components-the-leed-scorecard-for-existing-buildings-and-the-tenant-and-owner-engagement-aspect-its-a-programme-that-aims-to-promote-the-sustainable-op\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LEED EBOM<\/a><\/strong>. The three main objectives of this release are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Climate Action<\/strong> (50% points).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quality of Life<\/strong> (251 points).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ecological Conservation and Restoration<\/strong> (251 points).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/wp\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/LEED-v5-Scorecard.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35758\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>LEED v5 O+M prerequisites and credits broken down by main objectives. Source:<\/em><em> U.S. Green Building Council.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the framework of these main objectives, version v5 lays down five principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/wp\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/LEED-Principles.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35811\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Five LEED v5 principles. Source:<\/em><em> U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL, edited by Evalore.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, this new approach to the system\u2019s objectives (climate action, quality of life, ecological conservation and restoration) intersect or are interrelated with the five principles, meaning that this new v5 version represents a more holistic vision of LEED certification. With the decarbonisation of the construction sector being paramount, reducing emissions from existing buildings \u2013 that is, operational and embodied carbon \u2013 as well as preparing for climate disasters and adapting to climate change (climate resilience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Buildings certified with LEED v5 are not only more environmentally friendly but also offer tangible benefits in terms of energy efficiency, reduced operating costs, and an improved quality of life for their occupants.<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Differences of LEED v5 with previous versions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>New 3 prerequisites and 2 transversal credits<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The objectives are set through 3 new mandatory prerequisites. Additionally, two cross-cutting credits are incorporated, meaning they do not belong to a specific category. Source: U.S. GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Union of the categories Innovation and Regional Priority<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another difference compared to LEED v4 and earlier versions is the merging of the Innovation and Regional Priority categories into a single category, now renamed Project Priorities &amp; Innovation, worth 10 points. This allows projects to select priorities focused on the project itself, rather than exclusively on regional priorities as has been done in previous versions (v4). In the Beta draft, the innovation subcategories include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regional and local priorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Project type priorities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exemplary approach<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pilot credits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovative strategies<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Focus on Health and Wellbeing<\/strong>LEED v5 has expanded its focus on the health and well-being of building occupants, incorporating new credits and requirements that prioritise indoor air quality, natural daylight, and other aspects related to human well-being.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mayor Rigour in Energy Efficiency<\/strong>LEED v5 has established stricter standards for energy efficiency, incentivising practices and technologies that significantly reduce energy consumption and encourage the use of renewable sources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Focus on Resilience<\/strong>LEED v5 has incorporated heightened attention towards resilience against natural disasters and extreme events, promoting design and construction practices that enhance buildings' capacity to withstand and recover from such occurrences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Greater Integration of Technology<\/strong>LEED v5 has integrated a greater number of smart technologies and systems into the certification, encouraging the implementation of automation and monitoring solutions that improve building performance and management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emphasis on Continuous Assessment<\/strong>LEED v5 promotes continuous assessment of building performance over time, not just at the time of initial certification. This ensures that buildings maintain high sustainability standards throughout their lifespan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy Performance Threshold<\/strong>It should be noted that the Energy Star energy performance benchmark changes with respect to previous versions, being 60 for v5. LEED v4 requires an Energy Star score of 75 (i.e., the 25th percentile among buildings of the same type). However, projects cannot earn energy points until they reach the benchmark of 69 (the only benchmark from the 2009 version).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rating Systems<\/strong>To date of publication of this blog, LEED O+M for Operations and Maintenance is the only system to be released with version 5., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgbc.org\/resources\/leed-v5-operations-and-maintenance-existing-buildings-draft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Beta programme<\/strong><\/a>. This approach highlights the importance of establishing the most effective management practices, communicated through policies and assessments that support the process and guide direction. Below, we provide comparisons with respect to other sustainable certifications, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/en\/wp\/breeam-certification-is-an-internationally-recognised-environmental-assessment-method-for-buildings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BREEAM<\/a><\/strong> y <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/en\/wp\/what-is-well-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alright<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/evalore.es\/wp\/app\/uploads\/2024\/04\/beneficios-LEED-v5-OM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35813\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Source: EVALORE<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to obtain LEED v5 certification?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To obtain LEED v5 Certification, several steps must be followed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Register on the LEED online website&nbsp;<\/strong>and select the certification category \u00abLEED v5 Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance\u00bb (EBOM).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prepare the documentation <\/strong>necessary for certification. All should be collected&nbsp;<strong>Relevant data<\/strong>&nbsp;about the building, as in&nbsp;<strong>energy and water consumption, the materials used, waste management<\/strong>, and so on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Initial assessment <\/strong>of the building to determine its current condition and potential for improvement.&nbsp;<strong>Credit assessment<\/strong>, which consists of selecting and documenting the credits you wish to obtain.
